The Cranky Copyright Book

Quick facts about
Joe Clark’s upcoming book on copyright for creators

What’s the book about? Let me explain it to you in punchy microblogging style

Why cranky?

On bad days I’m pretty cranky anyway. I have bad days only now and then, but any day in which I’m subjected to relentless propagandizing by corporate copyright lobbyists, or by their equal and opposite force, copyleftists, is a day I end up cranky. There’s another way of looking at things and I’m gonna give it to you.

It’s mainly for Americans

Written by a Canadian who’s been inundated by American copyright propaganda, The Cranky Copyright Book introduces rugged, individualistic Americans to a rugged, invidualistic feature U.S. copyright law doesn’t have – moral rights.

It’s individualistic...

In the same vein, Cranky Copyright isn’t about corporate copyright greed or collectivist copyright surrender. It’s about individual creators – like you and me.

...but it doesn’t get personal

Supreme Court loser Larry Lessig’s got nothing to worry about. Unlike some people, I won’t berate bloggers or Creative Commons followers as trolls and hobbits (or whatever). I’ll stick to issues even as I explore the effects of the cult of personality around Lessig (and Michael Geist). (And incidentally, the phrase “Supreme Court loser Larry Lessig” is a simple statement of fact. Lessig even helpfully explained how and why he “lost the big one.”)

You’ve been brainwashed

Kinda! Or at least you’ve been crushed down like a black hole under peer pressure. (Did you really know what you were signing up for when you agreed to Creative Commons licensing, for example?)

It’s a real book

Cranky Copyright will be a real printed and electronic book issued by a conventional publisher. It isn’t going to be self-published, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I practise what I preach

Hypocrisy reduction is one of my goals in life. I stick up for my own authorial rights even though I also publish my own work as widely as possible. So guess what? You can do it too!

I need your help

If you want real dialogue and new ideas for copyright reform, you’ve come to the right place. But I can’t do it alone, and I could use some help – either in the form of a bit of E-cash you pitch in or in moral support. Find out more →
