Transit Shelters – No 101 TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Transit Shelters No 101 A completely flexible, modular design developed to address a wide range of urban conditions reflecting Toronto streets. Transit Shelters will be illuminated off-grid using Photovoltaic Panels that store power to a cluster of fully concealed gel-batteries wherever conditions permit. Roof design seamlessly integrates the Photovoltaic panels within the structure in a manner that maintains overall transparency, while providing excellent power storage. Roof design has been enhanced to incorporate a patterned, custom UV stencil that will help reduce light transmission and maintain a more comfortable temperature during warmer times of the year. Roof overhang, both in the front and rear of the shelter, has been refined to provide better protection/deflection from rain and snow. TOstreetsmart® Transit Shelters are completely flexible in design and are available in four (4) styles: Basic Nº 101.1, Narrow Nº 101.2, Canopy Nº 101.3, and the Residential Shelter Nº 101.4, specifically designed for internal residential bus routes. Each of the four versions is available in varied design configurations, such as front and rear entry, single, double and triple lengths, with and without ad caissons. TOstreetsmart® Transit Shelters also include a Streetcar Platform Shelter Nº 101.5, to address Toronto’s growing L.R.T network. The streetcar platform shelter includes a coordinated system of railings, bollards and signage to address all requirements. Coordinated display frames feature a Toronto Transit Map, and on the reverse side, a rubber substrate designed to post public messages. Surface material is engineered to ‘self-heal’ from staples, pins and tape. Transit Shelters are consistent with the City of Toronto Accessibility Design Guidelines enabling access for both manual and motorized wheel chairs. Enamel baked banding provides further delineation for the visually impaired. Structural columns and torsion bars have been re-engineered utilizing custom aluminum extrusions, with the glass fastening external to the columns in order to create a floating visual appearance. Tighter corners eliminate wind, rain and snow penetration. Roof lighting has been enhanced to provide more consistent ambient light. Transit Shelter bench has been increased in size to accommodate three people and the individual seats have been widened for additional comfort. Ad caisson has been reduced 75% in overall thickness using edge-lighting and ultra-energy efficient L.E.D. lighting. Slimline ad caisson will lighten and reduce the mass of the transit shelter overall. Street Name Signage integrates with newly proposed Toronto Street Signs above the roofline to increase visibility, eliminate visual obstruction for passengers waiting inside the shelter and provide for sub-identification of BIAs and Districts to improve tourist communication. Openings and flaps are designed for maximum ergonomics, greatest hygiene benefit and to prohibit illegal dumping. Each receptacle bin is separated by dividers to prevent cross-contamination of litter and recyclables. Height of the receptacle openings is in accordance with the City of Toronto Accessibility Design Guidelines. Flaps protect access to trash by vermin and can be opened without the use of the foot-pedal. Made of stainless steel, the ashtray container is completely separate, and designed to prevent fires and deter scavengers. Internal liners include integrated top and bottom handles and wheels to assist in garbage disposal. Additionally, we have designed the containers and openings to include the integration for future potential disposal of organics. A wheel or motorized chair can glide under the front console to access the interactive screen, comfortably read the map and related information. Full colour district maps will be expanded to provide additional close- up information of each area within the City. This will include expanding Astral’s library of Toronto tourist icons with districts, researching and creating comprehensive lists of parks, recreational options, districts, entertainment and cultural activities. Maps will continue to be personalized with branding and information appropriate to individual BIAs. New map vending equipment will include a LCD price display to let patrons know that the system is ready to accept fee, is empty and or in need of service. Dispensing tray has been extended with a ‘catch-lip’ to ensure that dispensed maps do not fall prior to customer retrieval. The universal ‘Information’ symbol, located at the top-side of the pillar, has been increased in size by 25% to ensure visibility from a distance for users. INFOTOGO®- Nº103 Multi-Publication Structures – No 104 TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Multi-Publication Structures No 104 TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Multi-Publication Structure No 104.1 Developed to coordinate with the overall TOstreetsmart® 100 Series furniture line, the multi-publication structure consists of all aluminum cabinetry, legs and handles. All window displays are of clear Lexan, so each publication is visible. All doors have been custom designed to provide a strong visual upgrade from the standard, stock vending box hardware. Cast in aluminum, the handles will truly integrate with the overall design. The units utilize the most reliable newspaper vending equipment and vending coin boxes. The form of the TOstreetsmart® Multi- Publication Structure is compact and elegant, raised above the ground on minimal height legs to prevent collection of debris along street edge. Roof is angled to allow rain and snow to run downwards towards the street drains. Tactile surfacing has been integrated to deter illegal posting on surfaces and the overall visual quality of this street furniture amenity. Backs and sides are clearly branded with title ‘Newspapers’, street designation and BIA/District branding to personalize neighbourhoods. Individual publication branding has been contained to the side, facing pedestrian traffic, and is presented in a single colour, typeface and size consistent with identification on all other furniture elements. Papers/Magazine graphics are clearly visible through transparent display windows contained within individual doors. Integrated into the street-facing side of the unit are large panels designed to exclusively showcase public art. The ‘gallery-on-the-streets’ display of Toronto art will frequently change to reflect mediums such as Photography, New & Mixed Media, Lithography/ Silkscreen and others. The program will be planned and managed in coordination with the Public Art Coordinator of Urban Design, City Planning Toronto and funded by Astral. TOstreetsmart® Multi-Publication Structures provide great flexibility. The system can be ordered in two, four, six, eight and twelve sections. The design enables single two-tier modules to be replaced/repaired without effecting the overall installation. TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Multi-Publication Surround Nº 104.2 Developed to coordinate with the overall TOstreetsmart® 100 furniture line, the TOstreetsmart® Multi-Publication Surround is a flexible post and panel system that combines custom perforated panels with structural posts to corral existing newspaper boxes in an orderly, secure and safe arrangement. Perforated panel screens can be customized to reflect the character of individual areas with thematic patterns, branding and messages. Custom screens will be developed in close coordination with BIA/District representatives to reflect the distinct character of individual Toronto places. Multi-Publication Structure – Nº 104.1A Multi-Publication Surround – Nº 104.2 Public Message Centres – No 105 TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Public Message Centres No 105 TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Freestanding Message Centre No 105.1 Toronto has had a major need for Public Message Centres where citizens can easily post information about events, public notices and related public information at no cost. This need has been clearly felt throughout the City as light columns, newspaper boxes, litter receptacles, phone booths and even parking meters have been turned into posting surfaces, resulting in a poor public appearance of our streets and causing significant damage to these other streetscape amenities. To address this citywide need, we have created two Public Message Centre solutions: a Freestanding version Nº 105.1, and a Wall-mounted version Nº 105.2, where wall surfaces exist in high-traffic public gathering locations. TOstreetsmart® Freestanding Message Centre is a three-sided column that provides spaces for standard letter-size and tabloid size information sheets. A central vertical rib exists on each posting face to prevent large format posters from being posted over public messages. Each message side is designed to accommodate upwards of 30 individual letter-size notices and tabloid format posters. Surface utilizes self-healing dark grey rubber that allows posters to be stapled, pinned, taped or glued. Material plugs into a surface structure to allow efficient maintenance and replacement of rubber surface over time. Faces are gently curved to coordinate with the form and character of the overall TOstreetsmart® 100 Series furniture line. In plan view, the form is a smaller scale version of the TOstreetsmart® INFOTOGO® pillar and is raised off the ground to prevent debris collecting at the base. Header panel at the top integrates both City branding and identification of ‘Message Centre’ using the City blue. TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Wall-mounted Message Centre Nº105.2 TOstreetsmart® Wall-mounted Message Centres are designed to be affixed to TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Transit Shelters, Automated Public Toilets and Bike Lockers, as well as on building wall surfaces. Consistent with the free-standing, this wall-mounted version uses the same resilient rubber surface for message posting and an aluminum frame that finishes the overall appearance and holds the changeable background in position. Vertical dividers have been integrated to prevent the posting of larger format advertising posters over public messages. A branded header panel identifies the function to ensure that the public clearly knows that these panels are for public use. Frame has been sized to match the height and width of the TTC Route displays so that they can be mounted back-to-back for a visually consolidated appearance. Public Message Centre – Nº 105.1 Public Message Centre – Nº 105.2 Automated Public Toilet – No 106 TOstreetsmart® 100 Series Automated Public Toilet No 106 Toronto will increase its attractiveness as an international City of high civic standards through the introduction of clean, well functioning and available Automated Public Toilets (APT). While the City requested one bench design, we believe that different lengths, and the option of a double-sided version, will be very attractive options for specific site conditions that have larger public spaces. The one-piece frame is constructed of durable stainless steel, with Ipay hardwood slats. Ipay slats are extremely durable hardwood with a high natural resistance to rot and decay. Harder than pine, cedar, and redwood, it’s ideal for long-term, high-use applications, and is virtually maintenance-free. Ipay is resistant to vandalism and provides excellent comfort for sitting. If slat replacement is required, the benches have been designed so that removal by authorized maintenance personnel is easy and cost efficient. We have reviewed the mounting system of the current benches that have been stolen throughout the City, and discussed this with several BIA groups. To address this real theft issue, we have used vandal-proof hardware for installation and completely concealed all base plat hardware under cover caps. Custom, cast armrests appear to mold directly from the Ipay slats creating a unique fluid appearance. Integrated City and BIA/District branding allow for neighbourhood personalization. TOstreetsmart® Benches have also been designed to integrate public art on the back. Depending on the approach to public art, the width of the back slats can be widened to accommodate a variety of artistic canvases. In addition to the stainless steel version, bench structures can be powder-coated in a specific colour to suit distinct streetscape conditions. The fluid lines of the TOstreetsmart® Benches are highly distinctive and entirely custom to Toronto. While the overall design has strong individual design character, subtle coordinating features have been integrated that are consistent with the base plates and central armrest of the transit shelter. We have considered this design from every angle and view. The sides, backs and underside are beautifully finished and all hardware is carefully concealed to avoid vandalism and or theft. Slats are pinned from the underside to provide an extremely clean visual appearance. Designed to be attractive from all views, TOstreetsmart® Benches will be attractive, and welcomed additions to Toronto’s streets. Bikes are set on internal angled carriages to reduce the footprint on the City right-of-way, while increasing in height to be more visible from a distance. Door hardware and locking devices require key access that can be centrally controlled at the City for security reasons. Panel surfaces are designed to showcase environmental graphics that can promote both the health and environmental benefits of cycling. While the City requested one bench design, we believe that different lengths and the option of a double-sided version, will be very attractive options for specific site conditions that have larger public space. TOstreetsmart® Bench appears to be a single, continuous fold panel, light in appearance and highly transparent from oblique views. We have reviewed the mounting system of the current benches that have been stolen throughout the City, and discussed these issues with several BIA groups. To address this real theft issue, we have used vandal-proof hardware for installation and completely concealed all base plat hardware under cover caps. Armrests flow as continuous folded sections from the base and are inset so that the bench appears to be cradled with an open, folded framework. The angular, sculptural lines of the TOstreetsmart® Benches are highly distinctive and entirely custom to Toronto. While the overall design has strong individual design character, subtle coordinating features have been integrated that are consistent with the structural support of the TOstreetsmart® 200 Series Multi- Publication Structures and Litter/ Recycling Receptacles. In addition to the stainless steel version, bench structures can be powder-coated in a specific colour to suit distinct streetscape conditions. TOstreetsmart® Benches have also been designed to integrate public art on the back. Depending on the approach to public art, the width of the back slats can be widened to accommodate a variety of artistic canvases. We have considered this design from every angle and view. The sides, backs and underside are beautifully finished and all hardware is carefully concealed to avoid vandalism and or theft. Slats are pinned from the underside to provide an extremely clean visual appearance. Designed to be attractive from all views, TOstreetsmart® Benches will be attractive, and welcomed additions to Toronto streets. Bench – Nº 207.1 Bench – Nº 207.2 Bike Parking Units – No 208 TOstreetsmart® 200 Series Bike Parking Units No 208 TOstreetsmart® 200 series Single Bike Parking Unit No 208.1 Engineered as a continuous, stainless steel casting, the sculptural form of the TOstreetsmart® Single Bike Parking Unit will raise the level of Toronto civic design and provide a reliable form of parking security. To create further visual continuity throughout Toronto, City branding is integrated tastefully within the top section, and has embossed text reading ‘Lock Bike Here’. The unit provides secure, strong and flexible bike lock-up to suit single bike parking needs. Custom casting and mounting methods eliminate all mechanical connections that are prone to vandalism, breakage and ultimately theft. The casting will have the visual appearance of material that has been sheared and folded, but in reality will be a singe solid continuous cast element. The custom casting and mounting methods eliminate all mechanical connections that are prone to vandalism, breakage and ultimately theft. TOstreetsmart® Single Bike Parking Unit can be used in linear rows within the furniture zone or clustered in circular configurations within a public plaza. The facetted cast form coordinates with the roof design and walls of the Transit Shelter without being repetitive in design detail. TOstreetsmart® 200 series Multi-Bike Parking Unit Nº 208.2 The TOstreetsmart® Multi-Bike Parking Unit is a modular variation of the single unit and is intended for open spaces such as a park, plaza or larger pedestrian boulevard. The single unit has been expanded to accommodate four, eight, and twelve bike lock-up versions. The distinctive cast vertical petal-shapes are linked together by a horizontal torsion bar that is continuously welded in place through three or five component sections depending on overall length. TOstreetsmart® 200 series Bike Parking Locker Unit Nº 208.3 TOstreetsmart® Bike Parking Locker Unit is designed as single modules with an angled in central partition that enables separate front and rear lockable bike storage. This approach reduces the footprint required for bike lockers from the current City pilot by 50%. The form of the bike lockers have been carefully detailed to enhance the quality of the streetscape from current models including the following: • Sloped roof to eliminate rain and snow build-up • Folded, facetted walls, integrate environmental graphics and health benefits of cycling • Secondary skin with tactile louver- inspired surface texture • Inset base-plate to create a floating appearance • Highly durable handles and hinges and authorized key-access only door and locks • Arrangement in single or multiple configurations to suit distinctly different streetscape conditions throughout Toronto.
