April | 2013 | Queers Against Israeli Apartheid City Staff to Toronto Councillors: Don’t Ban “Israeli Apartheid” April 22, 2013 Report advises City Council not to ban the phrase from city-funded events April 22, 2013 Toronto City of Toronto staff, directed by right-wing councillors on Council’s Executive Committee to advise on how to ban the phrase “Israeli apartheid” from Toronto’s Pride parade, returned with a defiant response: Don’t do it. In a nine-page report delivered last week, city staff told councillors that the presence of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid at the annual LGBT festival “has not been found to be in violation of the City’s grants policy or guidelines, corporate anti-discrimination policies, provincial human rights legislation or the Criminal Code (hate provisions).” “The law is clear to everyone except a handful of right-wing councillors: you can’t ban the phrase ‘Israeli apartheid’,” said Tim McCaskell of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid. “We have advice from lawyers, and now city staff, all telling councillors that they must allow free expression at the Pride parade.” The Executive Committee will vote tomorrow, Tuesday, April 23, whether to accept the staff report. If the recommendations are rejected, they will still go to the full council on May 4 for a vote. Several other organizations have also expressed their concern on this issue: CANADIAN CIVIL LIBERTIES ASSOCIATION: “The City currently provides funding grants to Pride, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Toronto International Film Festival. How will you handle the next demand to defund the AGO or TIFF because a particular exhibit or film highlighting human rights violations was offensive to those whose country was targeted?” TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: “As a public institution dedicated to the freedom of artistic expression, we are committed to this fundamental element of the Canadian Charter of Rights. We are committed to create opportunities for individuals to share and exchange their viewpoints in an environment of mutual respect. We consider freedom of expression to be an essential element of our mandate.” PEN CANADA: “PEN believes that the City of Toronto and its residents are better served when all are allowed to express their viewpoints freely.” TORONTO’S MAJOR CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS: “As public institutions dedicated to artistic expression, we consider freedom of expression to be an essential element of our mandate.” Kevin Garland, National Ballet of Canada Denise Herrera-Jackson, Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Michele Maheux, Toronto International Film Festival Alexandra Montgomery, Gardiner Museum Alexander Neef, Canadian Opera Company Janice Price, Luminato Matthew Teitelbaum, Art Gallery of Ontario Grant Troop, National Ballet School of Canada Andrew Shaw, Toronto Symphony Orchestra - 30 - For more information, please contact quaia.toronto@gmail.com Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off RT @andrewbrett: By going after #PrideTO, Councillor Pasternak might also cut funding for @TIFF_NET and @agotoronto: xtra.ca/public/Toronto…… 1 week ago March | 2013 | Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Israel/Palestine and the Queer International: A Conversation with Sarah Schulman and Richard Fung March 5, 2013 Saturday March 23, 2013, 3:00 until 5:00 pm Glad Day Bookshop, 598 Yonge St, Toronto, Ontario M4Y1Z3 Join University of Toronto Mark S. Join us for a post-screening discussion with Richard Fung of QuAIA and Mike Hoolboom. Fresh from screenings in Vienna, Jihlava, Montreal and Paris, Pleasure Dome presents the Toronto premiere of Mike Hoolboom’s new feature length film Lacan Palestine  (70 min., 2012). By adding his distinctive voice to the growing number of artists engaging with the subject of Palestine, Hoolboom skillfully crafts an essay film that collages newsreels, documentary interviews and Hollywood fabulations. As Zionist narratives of Palestine continue to be replayed in the corporate media, it is increasingly important to turn to counter-narratives of resistance. Hoolboom carefully complicates this record, replaying Palestine as the site of imperial projection and ghost protocols. Through an intricate analysis of the role of the father and the question of naming, Lacan Palestine offers an opulent collage that places the still-fledgling nation-state at the crossroads of psychoanalysis and permanent war. Grand Prize Winner! at the 2012 Festival International Signes de Nuit “The Grand Prize goes to Lacan Palestine for its immersion in a complex subject that arrives via a montage that is subtle, sensitive and strong. Its great visual richness emerges from impressive iconographic research. In spite of its diversity of images, this fluid work carries an insistent theme of personal history that makes us identify with a fate or destiny, creating a persistent, high wire hum.” (Festival International Signes de Nuit Grand Prize jury statement) On Lacan Palestine: “A mind boggling achievement by Canadian artist Mike Hoolboom, who has been called ‘the greatest found-footage master of the era.’ Skilfully assembled from existing film material, Hoolboom conjures visual allegories and cut-up counter-narratives around a notion of Palestine as “a land that is not a land.” Dizzying in its technical and conceptual density, Lacan Palestine is truly incomparable cinema.” (Nick Denes, London Palestine Film Festival) “This beautiful experiment is as noble as it is absurd, the intractable struggle continues, and in the midst of this fine searching a single certitude emerges. We are really in front of something that we can call cinema. Its striking intelligence and sudden illuminations confront us with a singular and authentic cinema. In the acrobatic editing, in Hoolboom’s control from the beginning of the film to the end, there is something shining, urgent, burning. There is a nearly blinding dimension to this accumulation of fragments that impels the viewer to re-see the movie as soon as it is finished. To observe again its folding parts, to find the hidden meanings, to meditate again and again on its implications.” (Describing the Indescribable by Marcel Jean, 24 Images, no. 159, Oct/Nov 2012) “The term essay film is sometimes used a bit too easily, but this really is one – and it isn’t an easy one. Skillfully cut and pasted from existing film material, the film provides a complex picture of Palestine. The land that is not a land, but does have inhabitants. An improbable place for love. The foundation of Palestine has a long and difficult history, characterized by a continuing battle for the right to exist. In this cinematographic essay, entirely composed of found-footage material, the history of a land without land is sketched, with its painful relationship with its neighbour Israel. Epic scenes from features, iconic news footage of historic moments, the ever-changing map of Israel, video art by Velcrow Ripper, Elle Flanders and Dani Leventhal, but also very personal recordings of everyday survival, are linked together by the psychoanalytic reflections of filmmaker Mike Cartmell, based on his own painful personal history. From his background as an adopted child, he wonders when you become someone, and how society can emerge from individuals; he compares the functioning of a complex society with that of John Coltrane’s jazz combo, in which even five super-egos managed to achieve harmony. In Mike Hoolboom’s view of Palestine, love and violence exist side-by-side, as a matter of course.” (Gertjan Zuilhof, International Film Festival Rotterdam) “Palestine is often described as a place that defies description, and for all the endless footage, a place that cannot be seen. Palestine lies between the imaginary and the real hence ‘imaging Palestine’ becomes perhaps one of the greatest cinematic and political challenges. Who better to take up this challenge than Toronto’s master experimental filmmaker Mike Hoolboom? The fragments that comprise Lacan Palestine are both the public and private languages that interpolate the symbolic sphere that constitute the history of Palestine and therefore the history of the Israel into being. As both a good analyst and a good filmmaker would know, originary myths uncover what lies at the heart of an ongoing conflict. And so Hoolboom takes us through these myths, dreams and canonical cinematic placeholders, presenting us Palestine in fragments—perhaps the only way to tell the story of what may be Palestine. Hoolboom takes the name the father as a starting point, wherein the subject (here Palestine) comes into being through the law (Israel) and rifles through the deep psychoanalytic rift whose symptom is contemporary Palestine.” (Elle Flanders) Mike Hoolboom is a Canadian artist working in film and video. He has made over fifty films and videos, though most have been withdrawn from circulation, approximately a dozen remain on view. His work has appeared in over four hundred festivals, garnering thirty awards. He has been granted the Tom Berner Award for community service and two lifetime achievement awards, the first from the city of Toronto, and the second from the Mediawave Festival in Hungary. He has enjoyed retrospectives of his work at the Images Festival (Toronto), Visions du Reel (Switzerland), Cork International Festival (Ireland), Cinema de Balie (Amsterdam), Mediawave Festival (Hungary), Impakt Festival (Holland), Vila do Conde Festival (Portugal), Jihlava Documentary Festival (Czech Republic), Stuttgarter Filmwinter (Germany), Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen (France), Sixpack Film (Vienna), the Buenos Aires International Festival (Argentina), and A Million Different Loves Festival in Poland. He is a founding member of the Pleasure Dome screening collective and has worked as the artistic director of the Images Festival and as the experimental film co-ordinator at Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre. Mike Hoolboom has published a pair of interview books with Canadian media artists, Practical Dreamers: Conversations with Media Artists (Coach House Press, 2008) and Inside the Pleasure Dome: Fringe Film in Canada (Coach House Press, 2001). He has edited or co-edited books on Frank Cole, Barbara Sternberg and Philip Hoffman, in addition to publishing electronic books on Deirdre Logue, Dani Leventhal, Al Razutis, Mike Cartmell, Steve Reinke, American Fringe Movies and the Documentary. In 1998 he authored Plague Years (YYZ Books) a tongue-in-chic autobiography. His first novel The Steve Machine was published by Coach House Press in the fall of 2008. He has published more than one hundred articles on fringe media which have appeared in magazines and catalogues around the world. Since 2004 he has been working on Fringe Online (www.fringeonline.ca ), a web project which makes available the archives of 40 Canadian media artists. This ongoing project currently consists of hundreds of pages of transcripts, reviews, interviews and scripts, and remains the largest publishing project in the Canadian fringe media sector. Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off ANC International Solidarity Conference supports boycott against Israel November 21, 2012 BDS South Africa welcomes the position adopted by the African National Congress (ANC) International Solidarity Conference to support the international boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign. 28 October 2012 There was widespread support from international delegates for the adoption and support of the Palestinian BDS call. However, there was one objection from a delegate from Germany who argued that Israel cannot be compared to Apartheid South Africa and thus an all-out boycott of Israel is ‘ill-informed’. The ANC Chairperson, Baleka Mbete, strongly responded saying that she has been to Palestine herself and that the Israeli regime is not only comparable but ‘far worse than Apartheid South Africa’. Ms Mbete received a resounding round of applause from delegates for articulating this position. The support given for the BDS call by the ANC International Solidarity Conference follows a statement that former Dutch anti-apartheid activist, Adri Nieuwhof, presented on behalf of over 150 former international anti-apartheid activists to the conference (find full statement here: http://tinyurl.com/9t33x27) calling on South Africa’s ruling party, the ANC, to support the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign. The international statement, presented by Nieuwhof, had the support of signatories from more than 19 countries, belonging to over 35 organizations. It also had the backing of long-time South African supporters such as E.S. Reddy, Alice Walker, Victoria Britain and Prexy Nesbitt. The statement read: ‘We – former international anti-apartheid activists – supported the ANC and the people of South Africa in their fight for liberation and against apartheid by mobilizing support for boycott, divestment and sanctions against the South African apartheid regime. We succeeded to put the crime of apartheid on the agenda of political parties, trade unions, churches…and concerned citizens. We called on people not to buy apartheid products and we discouraged tourism to the country. We campaigned for a weapons embargo, an oil embargo, a Krugerrand boycott, a sports, academic and cultural boycott.’ ‘On the occasion of the 3rd ANC International Solidarity Conference, we call on the ANC to support the Palestinian people in their fight for freedom, justice and equality. We call on the ANC to support the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) as expression of the party’s solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people to enjoy their rights.’ The Palestine Liberation Organization representative who was present at the ANC International Solidarity Conference welcomed the statement by the former international anti-apartheid activists calling on the ANC to support the Palestinian BDS call and further stressed the conditions of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails, thus the ANC International Solidarity conference decided to also include a demand for the release of all Palestinian political prisoners into the conference’s declaration. The Palestinian BDS call, issued in 2005, has come from the largest civil and political gathering of Palestinians. It is a non-violent method, modeled on the successful boycott of Apartheid South Africa, that has been adopted by Palestinians to pressurize the Israeli regime to respect international law and create the conditions to negotiate for a just peace. Mondoweiss includes the graphic summary. The survey indicates that a third to half of Jewish Israelis want to live in a state that practices formal, open discrimination against its Arab citizens. An even larger majority wants to live in an apartheid state if Israel annexes the territories. The survey conductors say perhaps the term “apartheid” was not clear enough to some interviewees. However, the interviewees did not object strongly to describing Israel’s character as “apartheid” already today, without annexing the territories. Only 31 percent objected to calling Israel an “apartheid state” and said “there’s noapartheid at all.” In contrast, 39 percent believe apartheid is practiced “in a few fields”; 19 percent believe “there’s apartheid in many fields” and 11 percent do not know. Holding the Youth Summit in Tel Aviv defies the international boycott which is aimed at ensuring Israel complies with international law. Queer Palestinian and Arab youth cannot attend a meeting in Tel Aviv and it is inappropriate to hold an international conference in a country that illegally occupies another and creates second class citizens on the basis of ethnicity. The bodies of Indigenous people, queer people, migrants, people of colour and the poor have been exploited, governed, labelled and regulated by the Canadian and US states. The state has tried to interfere in our communities, our languages, our families, our love relationships and our ability to seek refuge. But we have seen that if we resist, we can win! No One Is Illegal-Toronto, along with our friends at Queers Against Israeli Apartheid call on queers, trans folks, two-spirted people, people of colour, migrants, workers, students, radicals, and allies to join us for an evening of discussion, reflection and celebration. This spring, we mobilized to stop the deportation of our friend Alvaro Orozco, who was rejected for refugee status by the Canadian government because he didn't "look gay enough". This summer, we fought and struggled against the corporatization of Pride and dropped banners asserting the growing movement of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid. We also mobilized together one year after the repression of our communities during the G20 - where we continued to challenge the Toronto Police and stepped up the fight against Rob Ford's planned austerity cuts to the Toronto Budget. Tonight, we will share stories and thoughts with HAVOQ (Horizontally Aligned Very Organized Queers) based out of San Francisco - who have been touring across occupied Turtle Island - on their Undoing Borders Tour - after launching their interactive zine "Undoing Borders: A Queer Manifesto". This zine is the culmination of over two years of collective work where in people came together to discuss and analyze the relevance of queer identity and migrant justice organizing, the intersections and the contradictions. QUAIA, No One Is Illegal and friends will join HAVOQ to discuss recent victories, struggles and reflections on the intersections of local queer organizing, anti-colonial and no borders analyses! The panel will be followed by a couple of DJ sets from Toronto's own DJ Tanner (Nahed Mansour) and San Franciso's Essex. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for July, 2011 h1 [6]QuAIA congratulates Palestinian Queers for BDS on victory in moving IGLYO meeting from Tel Aviv July 29, 2011 QuAIA congratulates Palestinian Queers for BDS (PQBDS) for their important victory in convincing the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Youth and Student Organization (IGLYO) to reverse its decision to hold its general assembly in Israel. Here is the the PQBDS statement on this victory: Victory: IGLYO moves out of Israel! July 29th 2011 Palestinian queer groups welcome the [7]decision by the board of IGLYO to withdraw their annual General Assembly conference from Tel Aviv, Israel. Since June 1st, a campaign to get `[8]IGLYO [9]Out [10]of [11]Israel' was launched by[12]Palestinian [13]Queer [14]Groups to protest the organization's decision to hold its General Assembly in Tel Aviv, and accept funding from the Israeli government, followed by a [15]call [16]to [17]boycott the conference after IGLYO declined to change its location. We take this opportunity to salute IGLYO Member and Associate Organizations who took a principled and moral stance in support of our rights and headed our calls, including [18]NUS[19]-[20]LGBTQ, [21]Kaos[22]-[23]GL [24]and [25]Pembe [26]Hayat [27]from[28]Turkey; [29]BelonG [30]To, the Ireland LGBT youth organization; and [31]Helem - Lebanese Protection for LQBTIQ, and [32]IGLCN - The International Gay and Lesbian Cultural Network. This can only be seen as a continuation of the beautiful spirit of global solidarity, dominant during the South African anti-apartheid struggle and ongoing in solidarity with the rights of the Palestinian people, and oppressed people everywhere. We also call on other member organizations, and IGLYO to fully respect the Palestinian civil society call for BDS until Israel ends its oppression of the Palestinian people. Palestinian Queer groups have launched this campaign in protest of the location's conference, and acceptance of funding from the Israeli government, which directly implicates IGLYO in Israel's occupation, colonization and apartheid, and Israeli efforts to `re-brand' Israel. Israeli policies and occupation do not distinguish between queer and straight. All Palestinians--queer and straight-- must deal with the effects of Israel's apartheid system, illegal wall and colonial settlements, and military occupation. Furthermore, Palestinians in Gaza live under medieval and illegal siege, and the largest open-air prison in the world. Like all Palestinian citizens of Israel, queers are subject to institutionalized discrimination in all walks of life, and Palestinian refugees are denied their basic, UN-sanctioned right of return. In light of this effective and commendable solidarity with our call for boycott of IGLYO's GA in Israel, this decision by the IGLYO board can only be seen as a direct result of effective pressure from the IGLYO Out of Israel campaign and the strong moral stand taken by several IGLYO member and associate organizations, and other international groups. We urge other believe that Member Organizations and the IGLYO Board of Directors to heed our call, and respect our picket line by boycotting all complicit Israeli institutions, and any events that are in violation of the BDS call. We, however, were disappointed by the vague reasoning and language used in IGLYO's statement announcing the cancellation, and the complete ignorance of the calls and reasoning provided by Palestinian queer groups in opposition of the conference's location. IGLYO cited `recent legal changes in Israel' as a reason for their decision, they did not specify the nature of these changes, or why they are problematic, and thus did not address the underlying issues at the heart of the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and thus Israel's violations of Palestinian rights. This kind of wishy-washy reasoning allows IGLYO to back down from an unpopular decision, under pressure, while avoiding taking a stance on Israeli violations. A number of repressive laws have recently been passed in the Israeli parliament, including the anti-BDS law, and the Nakba law, and are part of an ongoing pattern of repressive laws that aim to further narrow the already dismal margin of freedoms available to those protesting Israel's occupation, colonialism and system of racial discrimination and to effectively criminalize Palestinian non-violent resistance and solidarity with it. These laws, however, are but a part of a 63-year old policy of systematic discrimination against the Palestinian people. It isn't just recent laws that should raise `concerns,' but all the patently racist laws that have been passed by the Israeli Knesset throughout the last 63 years aiming to maintain a system of domination of one racial group over another. Furthermore, IGLYO's encouragement of its Member Organizations to participate in the Israeli Gay Youth International LGBTQ Youth Leadership Summit to be held in Tel Aviv in December, is indicative of the organization's blatant hypocrisy. By continuing to support IGY and encouraging its MOs to attend this summit, IGLYO is ignoring the demands of Palestinian queer groups, our rights to an end of occupation, colonization and apartheid, and is de-facto crossing our picket line. The fact that IGLYO has moved its General Assembly from Israel is not enough while they are still encouraging their member organizations to violate the BDS guidelines and attend events in Tel Aviv. We see IGLYO's cancellation, under pressure, of its ill-conceived decision to hold its GA in Israel as a major victory for the BDS movement at large. This is particularly significant because this is the first time that such a wide debate around the boycott of Israeli apartheid has been initiated within queercommunities. It is a victory in itself that the IGLYO Out of Israel campaign has encouraged international LGBTQ organizations to view gay rights in the proper, wider context of human rights, and facilitated internal discussions about these issues, with a focus on Palestinian rights. Once again, we salute our partners for their principled, hard work, and reiterate our [33]call [34]to [35]queers[36], [37]academics[38], [39]artists [40] and [41]activists, to take a stance and join the BDS movement against oppression in its many forms, and the Israeli policies of occupation, colonization, and apartheid impacting all Palestinians, queer or otherwise. The awards ceremony got its name from a statement by Turkish football star Erman Toroglu who once said that eating genetically modified food can turn you gay. This year a special "Pinkwashing" Award was given to the IGLYO, the International Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer Youth and Student Organization. IGLYO is holding it's general assembly in Tel Aviv December 2011. Accepting the award on behalf of IGLYO, Kemal Ordek from Pink Life in Ankara explained that Pink Life is a member of IGLYO but that it had protested the decision to hold the meeting in Tel Aviv and plans to boycott it. "This award goes to the board of IGLYO," he explained. "They haven't listened to LGBT groups from around the world. They say that we should stay neutral on political questions. We are not neutral. At Toronto Pride today, Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) dropped a giant banner reading "Support Palestinian Queers-Boycott Israeli Tourism". "We're drawing attention to Israel's use of LGBT rights as a propaganda tool to justify apartheid policies and the occupation of Palestinian territories," said QuAIA spokesperson and longtime gay rights activist Tim McCaskell. "We're saying to queer people, respect yourselves and others. Don't be used. Don't pinkwash apartheid. Boycott gay tourism to Israel until it ends its apartheid policies." In June of 2010, Palestinian Queers for BDS (PQBDS), a Palestinian queer group with members throughout Israel/Palestine, including the occupied territories, called on queers worldwide to boycott Israel. In March of this year, PQBDS specifically called for a boycott of gay tourism to Israel. On April 13 of this year, the city manager presented his finding that the term "Israeli apartheid" did not contravene city policy or any Canadian law, and that its use by a participating organization should not be used to defund Pride Toronto. His report was accepted unanimously by city council. Exonerated by the report,on April 15, QuAIA told Rob Ford and Giorgio Mammoliti to find another pretext for their homophobic attacks on Pride. QuAIA committed to not marching in the 2011 Pride parade, but to engage in other activities during Pride Week. In the leadup to Pride, QuAIA hosted two events with renowned Jewish lesbian activist Sarah Schulman, and held a screening of queer films on Palestine. In previous years, QuAIA has fielded the largest contingent in the Pride parade, including a who's who of queer activists and leaders of all generations. To accept Israeli government money to hold its General Assembly in Israel despite the international call for boycott until Israel complies with international law is a betrayal of the IGLYO mandate. This is especially disturbing given that the decision was made after appeals by Palestinian queer organizations to respect the boycott. They have made it clear that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory is a major barrier to their work. The IGLYO has not only chosen a site inaccessible to them, but it has sent a message to queers throughout the Arab world that they are not part of our movement. In doing so, IGLYO increases their vulnerability, undermines their work and isolates them from the wider queer solidarity movement. It is disingenuous to claim that the choice of Tel Aviv is a sign of neutrality in this conflict. IGLYO is in fact making itself complicit in Israel's pinkwashing strategy: a PR campaign that uses Israel's legal tolerance of queers to justify the violent apartheid system it forces Palestinians to live under. There are dozens of suitable locations around the world where IGLYO can hold its General Assembly. Until Israel respects international law and dismantles its apartheid system, Tel Aviv is not one of them. Posted in [11]Uncategorized | Comments Off h1 [12]Israel lobby continues to attack queer institutions June 11, 2011 Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) wishes to express its concern about attacks on queer institutions by the Israel lobby--most recently the LGBT Community Services Center in New York. For the last two years, Toronto's Israel lobby has been attempting to defund Pride Toronto and drive the organization into bankruptcy because of the presence of "anti-Israel messaging" in Toronto's annual Pride parade. The Israel lobby has joined with homophobic city politicians to deny Pride Toronto public funding, and has pressured corporate sponsors to withdraw their support. Now under the leadership of gay porn entrepreneur Michael Lucas, New York's Israel lobby has succeeded in bullying the LGBT Community Services Centre using the same tactics. In response to threats against its funding, the Center recently announced an "indefinite moratorium" banning groups within the community that "organize around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict." Pro-Palestinian groups are the only target of this "moratorium." In forcing the Center to abandon its mandate to provide space for diverse LGBT community organizing, the Israel lobby has demonstrated its contempt for democracy and its unwillingness to engage in dialogue. The same lobbyists who claim to defend Israel because it is democratic and pro-gay are attempting to destroy queer institutions and stifle free speech. This is an irony that should not be lost on anyone in our communities. QuAIA wishes to express its solidarity with groups banned from the LGBT Center in NY. We urge the Center to reverse its decision and to once again support free speech and a diversity of opinion in the community. (For more information on the unaffiliated QuAIA NYC, [13]see the group's facebook page.) Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for April, 2011 h1 [6]QuAIA to Mayor: Find another pretext for your anti-Pride agenda April 15, 2011 Vindicated by a City of Toronto report, Queers Against Israeli Apartheid will hold its Pride Week activities outside of the parade, in a challenge to Mayor Rob Ford. TORONTO -- Following this week's report from City of Toronto staff concluding that the term `Israeli apartheid' does not violate the city's anti-discrimination policy, Queers Against Israeli Apartheid is announcing new plans for Pride 2011 that will pose a challenge for Mayor Rob Ford. "Last year's struggle was around censorship and our right to march in our community's Pride parade," says QuAIA spokesperson Tim McCaskell. "With the City report settling that debate, now is the time for us to move beyond the parade to build our community's response to Israeli apartheid." Instead of marching as a contingent in the parade this year, QuAIA will focus its Pride Week activities on hosting a community event to raise awareness of Israeli apartheid, and how LGBTQ communities can pressure the Israeli government to comply with international law through the campaign for boycotts, divestments and sanctions. QuAIA will also continue to contest Israel's "pinkwashing" campaign, which attempts to use LGBTQ human rights to obscure Israeli violations of Palestinian human rights. QuAIA's new plans will pose a challenge for Mayor Rob Ford, who announced that he would cut more than $100,000 in city tourism funding for Pride Toronto if QuAIA continued to march. "Rob Ford wants to use us as an excuse to cut Pride funding, even though he has always opposed funding the parade, long before we showed up," says Elle Flanders of QuAIA. "By holding our Pride events outside of the parade, we are forcing him to make a choice: fund Pride or have your real homophobic, right-wing agenda exposed." Media inquiries: [7]quaia.toronto@gmail.com Rob Ford's record on Pride funding and other LGBTQ issues: 2005: Then-councillor Rob Ford said during a council debate, "I don't understand a transgender... is it a guy dressed up like a girl or a girl dressed up like a guy?" 2006: Ford argued against city funding for AIDS prevention programs, saying, "If you are not doing needles and you are not gay, you wouldn't get AIDS probably, that's bottom line." He also voted against such programs in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. 2006: Ford was the lone vote against putting up three welcome banners over roadways for the 2006 International AIDS Conference being held in Toronto that year. The city did not require any extra funding to install those banners. 2010: Ford endorsed council candidate and fundamentalist pastor Wendell Brereton, who said, "My kind of Toronto doesn't parade immorality and call it pride." In endorsing Brereton, Ford said, "We're together. We have the same thoughts." 2010: During his mayoral campaign, Ford said, "I support traditional marriage. I always have." While trying to distance himself from homophobic attack ads, Ford called homosexuality a "lifestyle choice." 2011: In February, Ford was the only member of council to vote against accepting $100,000 from the province to establish screening programs for syphilis and HIV. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for March, 2011 h1 [6]QuAIA calls on NYC's LGBT Center to stay true to its values, reverse censorship March 3, 2011 Last week, The Center, New York City's LGBT community centre, cancelled the March 5th "Party to End Apartheid" to be held as part of Israeli Apartheid Week, after The Center was targeted for a defunding campaign by Israel lobbyists and self-promoting homo-socialites. Led by extremist Israeli-supporter and porn mogul Michael Lucas, who has done porn shoots in ethnically cleansed Palestinian villages, this bullying campaign threatened The Center's funding and put at risk all those who depend on the The Center's services. This is only the latest instance of Israel lobby groups threatening the funding of LGBT organizations who allow speech that is critical of Israeli policies. Here in Toronto, Supporting Our Youth and Pride Toronto have also been targeted by similar bullying campaigns. Last year, Toronto's queer communities fought back and forced Pride Toronto to reverse its decision when it caved to ban Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) from the Pride parade. Anti-censorship campaigns have been at the heart of many queer struggles: censorship has always been the tool of those who would keep us silenced. Queer struggles for justice must be founded on solidarity. The majority of those who continue to struggle against homophobia, transphobia, and gendered violence cannot do so without also struggling against the intolerable conditions of racism, colonialism, economic oppression and state violence they live under. We cannot base our measure of justice on the comfort of the most privileged. By censoring the "Party to End Apartheid" over threats from major donors, the Center is allowing those with the most power to censor the voices of the queers who continue to face these injustices. It's past time for queers to call out Michael Lucas for [7]his years of virulent anti-Arab racism and Islamophobic commentary, the most recent example of which is his column opposing democracy for Arab countries in The Advocate. Are these the values that should be influencing the programming decisions at a major LGBTQ Centre? If our queer institutions are to remain relevant to any but a handful of elites, we need to come together and battle this censorship. We did it in Toronto, and we can do it in New York. QuAIA calls on The Center to stay true to its values, and to reverse its decision and allow the event to continue as scheduled. We know that IAW events have been held at The Center in the past, with great success. QuAIA also offers its full support to the Siegebusters Working Group, Existence is Resistance and all Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) organizers fighting back against bullies like Lucas. As queers, we're here to say that the party must ALWAYS go on. *** Judith Butler, Sherry Wolf, Cleve Jones, and Sarah Schulman wrote a petition to save The Center, which we encourage you to sign: [8]http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savenyclgbtcenter/ Posted in [9]Uncategorized | Comments Off References Visible links 1. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/feed/ 2. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/comments/feed/ 3. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/osd.xml 4. http://wordpress.com/opensearch.xml 5. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/ 6. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/03/03/quaia-calls-on-nyc%e2%80%99s-lgbt-center-to-stay-true-to-its-values-reverse-censorship/ 7. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/michael-lucas%E2%80%99s-resume-of-pinkwashing-and-islamophobia/ 8. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savenyclgbtcenter/ 9. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/category/uncategorized/ 10. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/ 11. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/who/ 12. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/faq/ 13. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/apartheid/ 14. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/gayisrael/ 15. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/media/ 16. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/contact/ 17. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/how-to-donate/ 18. http://twitter.com/quaiaTO 19. http://www.africanglobe.net/africa/israel-begins-rounding-interning-africans/ 20. http://twitter.com/quaiaTO/statuses/225582814458945536 21. http://itisapartheid.org/ 22. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2009/09/09/apartheid-israel-is-no-place-for-lgbt-leisure-tourism/ 23. http://freeezra.org/ 24. http://www.alqaws.org/ 25. http://www.aswatgroup.org/english/ 26. http://www.bekhsoos.com/web/ 27. http://www.caiaweb.org/ 28. http://www.helem.net/ 29. http://www.independentjewishvoices.ca/ 30. http://pqbds.wordpress.com/ 31. http://www.pinkwatchingisrael.com/ 32. http://www.facebook.com/pages/NYC-Queers-Against-Israeli-Apartheid/127621283984596 33. http://www.quitpalestine.org/ 34. http://www.salaamcanada.com/ 35. http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/3391 36. http://www.endtheoccupation.org/downloads/AAFFAQs.pdf 37. http://www.bdsmovement.net/ 38. http://electronicintifada.net/ 39. http://www.oneworld-publications.com/pdfs/Eth_Cleans_Palest.pdf 40. http://itisapartheid.org/ 41. http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/mr280409.html 42. http://www.monthlyreview.org/090622lang.php 43. http://www.hsrc.ac.za/Document-3230.phtml 44. http://www.palestinecampaign.org/images/apartheid%20factsheet%20-%20web.pdf 45. http://www.quitpalestine.org/resources/publications/quit_about.pdf 46. http://dissidentvoice.org/2010/04/why-there-are-no-israelis-in-the-jewish-state/ 47. http://www.counterpunch.org/aloni01082007.html 48. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2012/06/ 49. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/11/ 50. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/09/ 51. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/07/ 52. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/06/ 53. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/05/ 54. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/04/ 55. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/03/ 56. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/01/ 57. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2010/11/ 58. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2010/07/ 59. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2010/06/ 60. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2010/05/ 61. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2010/04/ 62. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2010/03/ 63. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2009/09/ 64. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2009/08/ 65. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2009/06/ 66. http://wordpress.com/?ref=footer 67. http://theme.wordpress.com/credits/queersagainstapartheid.org/ 68. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/feed/ 69. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/comments/feed/ 70. javascript:void(0) 71. form field = text entry field 72. form field = submit button 73. http://wordpress.com/signup/?ref=lof Hidden links: 74. http://queersagainstapartheid.org/938-2/ Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2012 16:31:14 Subject: 2011 January ? We often hear about the work of large-scale NGOs, yet we don't often hear about the queer community organizing that happens outside of the NGO system. This panel features activists who work on queer issues in India, Canada and the Caribbean at both local and transnational levels. It will highlight the tensions that activists face when their work puts them in contact with local governments, legal systems, international relations, and even popular culture. Speakers: Ponni Arasu, queer activist (New Delhi, India) The Future of Queer Activism in India Akim Larcher, Stop Murder Music Campaign (Toronto, ON) Working Against Homophobia in the Caribbean from within Canada Scott Clarke, Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (Toronto, ON) On "Solidarity with Palestinian Queers" Moderated by: Dina Georgis (Toronto, ON) Ponni Arasu is a queer feminist activist from New Delhi, India. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for June, 2010 [6]Older Entries ª h1 [7]March with QuAIA at Pride! June 30, 2010 Be a part of history! Here are the details for marching with Queers Against Israeli Apartheid at Pride this year: When: Sunday, July 4th at 1:00pm Where: Bloor Street East & Jarvis Street (staging area: section N #0) QuAIA is calling on all our supporters: homos, queers, dykes, fags, trans folks, and allies to march with us at the Pride Parade on Sunday, July 4th. We won the fight against the ban because of the radical and dedicated organizing of the queer community over the past month, and now it's time to celebrate! We're asking all supporters to "queer up" our contingent as we parade our politics against Israeli Apartheid through Toronto. Bring your sassy selves, in pink, green, and glitter! Although the ban has been reversed, the occupation of Palestine and Israel's apartheid policies are still in place. More than ever, we need the queer community and the rest of Toronto to hear our message against Israeli apartheid, and to understand why this is a queer issue. We need to speak out against the pinkwashing of the occupation, and call for queers of conscience to boycott tourism in Israel. QuAIA is going to be the loudest and largest part of Pride this year! We have developed guidelines for anyone who plans on marching with us. We ask that you read them and share them with all marchers. If you have any questions, please e-mail: quaia.toronto@gmail.com. Join us in our continuing movement in the campaign for boycotts, divestments and sanctions against Israeli apartheid. Guidelines for marching with Queers Against Israeli Apartheid: The Pride Coalition for Free Speech and QuAIA have agreed to march together with other allies and supporting groups. Since the ban on QuAIA's participation has been lifted, we do not expect problems from Pride marshals. QuAIA and the Coalition have our own marshals, who will be identifiable. If you have any questions, ask them. QuAIA and the Coalition are committed to marching peacefully, with slogans/behaviour that is progressive, non-violent, anti-racist and in the spirit of the political and celebratory roots of Pride. Responding to harassment: If an angry Israel supporter heckles/provokes you, don't engage! Walk away, call out: "Can I get a witness?" If you see a fellow marcher losing their temper, quietly remind them: "Don't engage!" Remember, if angry Israel supporters try to provoke you, don't take the bait! If a fellow marcher is acting weird (advocating violence, racist slogans, etc.) they're probably a provocateur. Don't confront them yourself -- tell a QuAIA/Coalition marshall immediately. Police: We are not anticipating problems with the police, but given the G20, nothing is impossible. If a cop confronts you for any reason, don't engage. Ask if you are free to go. If they say yes, walk away, calling out: "Can I get a witness?" If they say no, do not resist. You don't have to answer any questions beyond your name, address and date of birth. If you are arrested, ask for your phone call and call legal support. If you see someone being arrested, don't intervene yourself. Tell QuAIA/Coalition marshals. Peacefully support them with chants and cameras. In the unlikely event that we are prevented from marching, QuAIA/Coalition marshals will negotiate on our behalf. They will decide what's next. If QuAIA/Coalition marshalls announce "Sit down for your rights", you have two choices: walk away peacefully, or sit down (and maybe get arrested). Decide in advance what your choice is. If you have outstanding warrants, vulnerable immigration status or serious health problems, please don't risk arrest. Carrying recreational drugs could compound charges against you. We aren't trained in civil disobedience (going limp, passive resistance, being carried away). If cops say they're arresting you, don't talk back. Just get up of your own accord and walk away with them. Legal support: We will distribute legal support numbers. Write the number on your arm in case your belongings are taken. Lawyers are standing by in the very unlikely instance that there are arrests. If you are arrested you only have to give your name, address, and date of birth. You have the right to know why you are being arrested and to speak to a lawyer immediately upon arrest. Charges will probably be fines (disturbing the peace, blocking traffic) with a court date down the road. And on a lighter note, here are some other things we are working on for Pride: DYKE MARCH! Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.: QuAIA members will be marching in the Dyke March with Dykes & Trans People for Palestine. Meet outside the 519 Church Street Community Centre. (Facebook group) T-SHIRTS! We have t-shirts to sell for $15 each (or two for $25). Make a fierce statement at Pride this year! Pride Toronto announced today that it would not censor the term `Israeli apartheid' from the parade. "This is a victory for the Palestine solidarity movement, which has faced censorship and bullying tactics from the Israel lobby for far too long," says Tim McCaskell, a member of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid. "The Israel lobby learned a tough lesson today about our community's proud history of standing up to censorship and human rights abuses." In May, Pride Toronto had announced that it would censor the term in response to pressure from the City of Toronto and Israel lobby groups. In response, Dr. Alan Li rejected the title of grand marshal for the 2010 parade and Jane Farrow refused her appointment as Honoured Dyke. The decision to censor Queers Against Israeli Apartheid was met with widespread condemnation from the LGBT community, including Olympic gold medalist Mark Tewksbury, the 519 Church Street Community Centre, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and 23 current and former Pride honourees, who returned their awards in protest. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for May, 2010 [6]Older Entries ª h1 [7]Dr. Alan Li rejects appointment as Pride Toronto Grand Marshal May 28, 2010 Today, Pride Toronto's choice for grand marshal of the 2010 Pride Parade has refused his appointment, citing the organization's censorship of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA). "I have been actively involved in many social justice movements locally and internationally for more than thirty years," says Dr. Li, a co-founder of Gay Asians Toronto, Asian Community AIDS Services, the multicultural Coalition Against Homophobia, and the first openly gay president of the Chinese Canadian National Council. "I thus remember very clearly our community's battles against censorship that attempted to invalidate our concerns, minimize our struggles and silence our voices." On May 25, Pride Toronto announced that it would censor the term "Israeli apartheid" from all Pride events this year, including the parade, dyke march and trans march. This followed extensive pressure from Israel lobbyists, sponsors of the festival, and City Hall, reacting to the participation of QuAIA in the parade for the past two years. "Pride's recent decision to ban the term "Israeli Apartheid" and thus prohibit the participation of the group Queers Against Israeli Apartheid from participating in Pride celebrations this year is a slap in the face to our history of diverse voices," says Dr. Li. "Pride's choice to take pre-emptive step to censor our own communities' voices and concerns in response to political and corporate pressure shows a lack of backbone to stand up for principles of inclusiveness and anti-oppression." Dr. Li's refusal of the grand marshal appointment comes a day after an open letter to Pride Toronto was published from the original founders of Lesbian and Gay Pride Day in 1981, denouncing Pride Toronto's censorship. "Solidarity with all struggles against oppression has been a crucial part of the history of Pride," reads the [8]letter. For the full text of Dr. Alan Li's letter to Pride Toronto, click [9]here. May 28, 2010 Queers Against Israeli Apartheid members Alexis Mitchell and John Greyson produced this video of the Pride Toronto press conference for RabbleTV: IFRAME: [12]http://www.youtube.com/embed/GBS719b0uSo?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&shows earch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent Posted in [13]Uncategorized | Comments Off h1 [14]Open Letter to Pride Toronto from founders of Pride in 1981 May 27, 2010 As founding members of the Toronto Lesbian and Gay Pride Day Committee, and people involved in organizing the first Pride event in Toronto at the end of June in 1981, we stand totally opposed to the decision of the current Toronto Pride Committee to ban the use of "Israeli Apartheid" at Toronto Pride events. This banning of political speech is clearly an attempt to ban the participation of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) and queer Palestine Solidarity supporters from the parade and from participation in a major event in our communities. This sets a very dangerous precedent for the exclusion of certain political perspectives within our movements and communities from Pride events. We call on the Pride committee to immediately rescind this banning and to instead encourage QuAIA's participation in the pride parade. We remind people of the political roots of Pride in the Stonewall rebellion against police repression in 1969 and that the Pride march in 1981 in Toronto grew out of our community resistance to the massive bath raids of that year. On the Pride march in 1981 about a thousand of us stopped in protest in front of 52 Division Police Station (which played a major part in the raids) and our resistance to the bath raids was rooted in solidarity with other communities (including the Black and South Asian communities) also facing police repression. Two of the initiating groups for Pride in 1981 -- Gay Liberation Against the Right Everywhere (GLARE) and Lesbians Against the Right (LAR) -- organized Pride as part of more general organizing against the moral conservative right-wing. This included not only its anti-queer but also its anti-feminist, racist and anti-working class agendas. We also remember in the 1980s that lesbian and gay activists around the world, including in Toronto in the Simon Nkoli Anti-Apartheid Committee, took up the struggle not only for lesbian and gay rights in South Africa but linked this to our opposition to the apartheid system of racial segregation and white supremacy in South Africa. This global queer solidarity helps to account for how it was that constitutional protection for lesbians and gay men was first established in the new post-apartheid South Africa. Solidarity with all struggles against oppression has been a crucial part of the history of Pride. To break this solidarity as the Pride Committee has now done not only refuses to recognize how queer people always live our lives in relation to race, class, gender, ability and other forms of oppression but also breaks our connections with the struggles of important allies who have assisted us in making the important gains that we have won. Signers: Katherine Arnup, founding member of the Lesbian and Gay Pride Day Committee, member of Lesbians Against the Right and Gay Liberation Against the Right Everywhere. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for April, 2010 h1 [6]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid - standing proud in the face of threats and intimidation April 30, 2010 Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) is a Toronto-based organization that was formed to work in solidarity with queers in Palestine and Palestinian resistance movements around the world. We support the 2005 Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel until it complies with international law. As queers, we recognize that homophobia exists in Israel, Palestine, and across all borders, but queer Palestinians face the additional challenge of living under occupation, subject to Israeli state violence and control. We also recognize that as part of its Rebranding Campaign, Israel is cultivating an image of itself as an oasis of gay tolerance in the Middle East. QuAIA works to out this `pinkwashing' of Israeli apartheid. For the past two years, QuAIA has marched in Toronto's Pride Parade despite attempts by Israel lobby groups to have us banned. In 2009, over 200 people marched under the QuAIA banner at the Pride Parade. The success of QuAIA is seen as a threat to supporters of Israeli apartheid, who have renewed their smear campaign against the group. Israel lobby groups are pressing private sponsors and all levels of government to pull funding from Pride Toronto if QuAIA is allowed to march. In response to this pressure, in March 2010, Pride Toronto implemented a policy that required all groups to have their slogans pre-approved before marching in the parade. Community outrage forced Pride to remove this condition, but the attacks on QuAIA continue. In April 2010, City of Toronto staff warned Pride Toronto to ban QuAIA from the parade or they could face cuts to its City funding. Mayoral candidates have started to make similar threats to Pride. At this point it is not clear whether Pride will give in to these demands, but QuAIA is prepared to fight any ban that may be imposed. The tremendous outpouring of support we have already received from our allies tells us that we will not be alone in this fight. The attack on QuAIA takes place in a broader context of attempts by all levels of government to suppress criticism of Israel in Canada. In just over a year, we have seen cuts to the funding of the Canadian Arab Federation, KAIROS and UNRWA, the banning of George Galloway, and a motion in the Ontario legislature condemning Israeli Apartheid Week. These attacks prove that BDS is an increasing threat to Israeli apartheid and have only strengthened our resolve. QuAIA will not back down in the face of threats and intimidation - we are proud of our commitment to BDS and our solidarity with Palestinians, queer-identified and straight. We will march in Pride Toronto 2010 because we are proud of our politics. Posted in [7]Uncategorized | Comments Off h1 [8]City's Threat to Pride Toronto Condemned Internationally April 26, 2010 Letters of support for the inclusion of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) in Toronto's gay pride parade have poured in from prominent groups and activists locally and abroad, including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Queer Ontario, and LGBT organizations in Palestine and Israel. City of Toronto staff were quoted in the Toronto Star on April 18 suggesting that future city funding for Pride Toronto may be jeopardized if the activist group is allowed to march in this year's parade. "We are appalled by attempts made at the City of Toronto to use censorship measures against the pride parade's participation of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid," reads an April 25 letter of support from Israeli Queers for Palestine. "We wish to pledge our support to QuAIA in this time of unjust political persecution for their courageous standing for Palestinian rights and against any form of oppression." The Canadian Civil Liberties Association wrote a letter to mayor David Miller on April 20 objecting to the threat to Pride funding. "In activities such as parades, art exhibitions and theatre performances, points of view on controversial subjects may be expressed that may make individuals from specific communities uncomfortable. Freedom of expression is central to such activities, however, and these considerations alone should not preclude public funding." "We believe that as queers, one of the most disadvantaged and oppressed minorities in human societies, we should protest against all forms of oppression and struggle together," says a joint letter from Palestinian queer organizations al-Qaws and Aswat. "As Palestinian queers, our struggle relates to social injustices caused by the discrimination that is deeply rooted in Israel's policies and practices against the Palestinian people, straight and gay alike." On April 24, Queer Ontario issued a statement denouncing the threat from city staff. "We are particularly concerned about how the word `apartheid' is being interpreted as `hate' and the implications of such on free speech. We are disturbed that such a warning was issued based upon mere reports from `some' city councilors and unspecified members of `the public', without proper research being conducted first." Co-founder of the U.S.-based Lesbian Avengers Sarah Schulman wrote to Pride Toronto on April 20 to express her gratitude that the censorship attempts have so far proven unsuccessful. She wrote: "I would be happy to do whatever I can to show support for the continuation of Pride as a day that we all share together." "We salute QuAIA for their courageous and moral stance against Israeli apartheid and Israel's blatant disregard of international law," said an April 23 statement issued by the group Palestinian Queers for Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions. "We support QuAIA for their outstanding solidarity actions, including the refusal to be silenced by the decision of the City of Toronto." "We don't need corporate sponsors, government funders, or external lobby groups telling our community what we can talk about in our own parade," says Tim McCaskell, an organizer of the protests against bathhouse raids which sparked the creation of Pride Toronto in 1981. An April 18, 2010 feature story in the Toronto Star revealed that City of Toronto staff warned Pride Toronto to ban activist group Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) from the parade or face repercussions to its city funding. Earlier this month, a leaked e-mail from TD Bank Financial Group revealed that the premier corporate sponsor was requesting a meeting with the Pride Toronto board of directors to discuss the inclusion of QuAIA in the parade. "Our community has successfully resisted censorship for decades, and we aren't going to stop now," says Anna Willats, a former Honoured Dyke of Pride Toronto. "City bureaucrats and corporate sponsors have no business attaching strings to their financial support that would take the politics out of Pride." City of Toronto staff claim that the participation of QuAIA in last year's parade violated the city's anti-discrimination guidelines. This conclusion was reached without any public process. No charges have been laid, and no complaints made to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. The decision was made by bureaucrats behind closed doors, based on false information propagated by pro-Israel lobbyist Martin Gladstone, and city staff admitted that they had not conducted a full investigation. "The City of Toronto is saying that criticizing the Israeli government is a violation of their anti-discrimination guidelines," says Ayden Scheim, a Jewish queer/trans activist. "Invoking human rights to suppress political speech is offensive to those of us who actually care about legitimate human rights issues." "In the 1980s, I marched in the Pride parade as part of a queer group organized against South African apartheid," says queer filmmaker Richard Fung. "Why should queer activists expressing solidarity on international human rights issues be censored from Pride today?" Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for March, 2010 h1 [6]Martin Gladstone's campaign of lies and defamation March 31, 2010 Toronto lawyer Martin Gladstone has recently been quoted in the Toronto Sun claiming that members of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid wore "Nazi memorabilia" in last year's Toronto Pride parade. He is making this claim based on one person, not a QuAIA member, marching in last year's parade with a well known Anti-Racist Action t-shirt which features a crossed-out swastika, like a no smoking sign. Here is an image of this t-shirt from Martin Gladstone's own homemade film, Reclaiming Our Pride. Even though this very clear and unambiguous image was available to Gladstone, he has been circulating the following blurry image that obscures the t-shirt, and has been claiming that it shows a swastika and is evidence of anti-Semitism. (Annotations are from Martin Gladstone's submission to the "Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism"): Gladstone has been lobbying city councillors, media, Members of Parliament, and Pride sponsors to ban QuAIA from Pride, and has used this fabrication as the basis of his demand. The Toronto Sun reprinted this lie without seeking comment from QuAIA or verifying the accuracy of the claim. Gladstone has also reported that QuAIA marchers chanted "fist by fist, blow by blow, apartheid state has got to go." The actual chant was "brick by brick, wall by wall, Israeli apartheid is going to fall." Again, Gladstone is trying to create an atmosphere of violence that is based on falsehoods. QuAIA believes that it is irresponsible to use lies and fabrications to foment fears of anti-Semitism. Saying that an anti-Nazi symbol is a Nazi symbol is like saying a "no smoking" sign means "please smoke", or a "no left turn" sign means "please turn left", or a "no parking" sign means "park here". We can only hope he doesn't have a driver's license. Posted in [7]Uncategorized | Comments Off h1 [8]QuAIA NEW MEMBERS MEETING! As queers, we recognize that homophobia exists in Israel, Palestine, and across all borders. But queer Palestinians face the additional challenge of living under occupation, subject to Israeli state violence and control. Israel's apartheid system extends gay rights only to some, based on race. There is no pride in apartheid, and QuAIA is dedicated to fighting it wherever it exists. We work in solidarity with anti-colonial struggles and with queers leading their own struggles of resistance. Citizen Nawi | Nissim Mossek | 2007 | 80 min | Documentary | Israel Director Nissim Mossek dives headfirst into the life and work of Ezra Nawi, a Sephardic plumber and political activist living in Jerusalem. This touchingly personal documentary follows Ezra as he runs interference for a village of Palestinian farmers in the hills of South Hebron. The film also explores Ezra's complicated and loving relationship with Fuad Mussa, a young Palestinian man that he shelters illegally in his home. In the raw and gritty tradition of the social documentary, Citizen Nawi delivers hope through an intimate portrait of one man's fight for social justice. The audience of this conference is expected to be made up mostly of travel agents who specialize in promoting LGBT tourism. With this conference IGLTA, in cooperation with an Israeli LGBT organization, the Aguda, will give its symbolic and financial support to a state that continually occupies, oppresses and dispossess millions of Palestinians and murders and imprisons many thousands of them. We, queer activists and groups, call on LGBTQI people and friends around the world to join us in our protest against IGLTA's promotion of leisure tourism to apartheid Israel. We demand that IGLTA cancel its planned conference in Israel and cease any promotion of tourism to this country. For some time now, Israeli officials and organizations such as the Aguda, who are cooperating closely with IGLTA, have been promoting LGBT tourism to Israel through false representations of visiting Tel Aviv as not taking sides, or as being on the "LGBT" side, as if LGBT lives were the only ones that mattered. It is implied that it's okay to visit Israel as long as you "believe in peace," as if what is taking place in Palestine/Israel is merely a conflict between equals, rather than an oppressive power relationship. Consistent with globalization's tendency to distance the "final product" from the moral implications of the manufacturing process, LGBT tourists are encouraged to forget about politics and just have fun in a so-called gay-friendly city. This Zionist propaganda disguises the reality of anti-LGBT violence. Last month's Tel Aviv shooting in a gay center has reminded us that it is not as friendly as it is depicted to be. Since that attack, numerous reports have been released on the prevalence of violence against LGBT people in Israel, including a state official report suggesting that "80% of gay teens in Israel suffer some sort of sexual orientation-related abuse" (Ynetnews.com). Even more importantly, Tel-Aviv's flashy coffee shops and shopping malls, in contrast with the nearby deprived Palestinian villages and towns, serve as evidence that the Israeli society, just as the Israeli state itself, has built walls, blockades and systems of racist segregations to hide from the Palestinians it oppresses. The intersection of physical and societal separations and barriers have justly earned the term apartheid, referring to an historically parallel racist regime in South Africa against the indigenous Black population of that country. Leisure tourism to apartheid Israel supports this regime. It is not neutral, and it certainly is not a step toward real peace, which can only be based on justice. We encourage people to visit Palestine and join Palestinians in solidarity with their popular struggle. A number of organizations are doing this, including International Solidarity Movement, Palestine Solidarity Project and International Women's Peace Service. This clearly is not what IGLTA is doing. Instead, by its actions, IGLTA calls on our communities to turn our backs on the oppression of Palestinians, and to ignore a specifically effective Palestinian popular non-violent initiative - the BDS movement. On July 9^th 2005 171 Palestinian civil society's organizations issued a statement calling for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. These measures are to be applied until Israel meets its obligation to recognize the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination and fully complies with the precepts of international law by: 1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall; 2. Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and 3. Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194 (http://bdsmovement.net/?q=node/52). In recent months, especially after the murderous assault on Gaza, the BDS movement is gaining momentum worldwide. New groups are forming and many have implemented successful non-violent protest actions around the world. These actions inspire us for what is to come. By supporting BDS now, we can have a significant impact on the overall struggle for justice in Palestine. We urge LGBTQI people and friends around the world to endorse the Palestinian call and to join this particular action of solidarity and protest. TAKE ACTION Please email International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, calling on it to cancel its planned conference in Israel and any promotion of tourism to this country. As someone who believes in protecting human rights, I am disturbed by your attempt to promote leisure tourism to apartheid Israel. I plead with you to distance yourselves from Israel's crimes. Please cancel the conference, along with any other promotion activity on your behalf of tourism to Israel. Just as I consider LGBT rights to be a human rights issue, the rights of Palestinians are a human rights issue as well. I reject any attempt to depict Tel Aviv as separate from Israel, the state that it is, to a large extent, sustaining. Given the continued occupation, colonization and oppression of the Palestinian people by Israel, it seems to me awful and hypocritical to promote leisure tourism to its largest and richest city in the name of LGBT human rights. In an environment of racist segregation, as imposed on the Palestinians by the annexation wall and other fences and blockades, leisure tourism promotion to Tel Aviv and Israel is especially harmful and morally corrupt. The extent of Israel's oppression of the Palestinians, and its long duration, require that organizations and businesses be wary of connecting themselves with it. In the territories occupied in 1967, unarmed Palestinians, including teenagers and children, are routinely shot and imprisoned by the Israeli army. Israeli forces routinely destroy people's homes, confiscate their land and resources, discriminate against Palestinians in their access to water, and restrict their everyday movement between Palestinian towns and villages. Millions of Palestinian refugees and their descendants are prevented from returning to their homes and hometowns, many living in refugee camps without any compensation for their continued loss and suffering. In only the three weeks of its most aggressive military offensive on Gaza, the Israeli army killed more than 1400 Palestinians, wounded thousands of people and destroyed the houses of tens of thousands of people. Since IGLTA, in its activities, is providing symbolic as well as financial support to Israel, I see it as inevitable to connect IGLTA to such atrocities. Only by abstaining from dealing with Israel can you distance yourselves from such moral corruption and the rightful criticism that will come with it. September 8, 2009 Over 30 Ottawa Queers and Allies were present in the "Queers Against Apartheid - From Canada to Israel" contingent in the Capital Pride parade last Sunday. Taking to the streets with support from groups such as Agitate!, the Association of Palestinian Arab Canadians, Independent Jewish Voices- National, Queer Faction, the Ontario Public Interest Research Group -Ottawa, Indigenous People's Solidarity Movement, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights, Students Against Israeli Apartheid and many others, the contingent marched in solidarity with indigenous people in "Canada" as well as Palestinians resisting Israeli apartheid. While marching down Wellington street, past Parliament Hill, many crowd members could be heard joining in the chants of "Pride is for all - tear down the wall", "less occupation, more masturbation", "tear down the wall, tear off your clothes" and "B!D!S!M!". Some supporters in the crowd even brought Palestinian flags. Earlier in the summer a letter was circulated around Ottawa defending the place of queer Palestinian solidarity activists to take part in pride events. Now, after a summer that saw an important presence of queers against apartheid in Toronto, MontrÈal and Ottawa, it is clear that we have carved out an important space for ourselves, both in the struggle for Palestinian human rights, as well as in the LGBT community. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid [5]Queers Against Israeli Apartheid Archive for August, 2009 h1 [6]Call to queers in Ottawa, Gatineau: march to show there is no pride in apartheid! August 28, 2009 After Toronto and MontrÈal's highly successful contingents of queers against Israeli apartheid, it is now Ottawa's turn to declare that THERE IS NO PRIDE IN APARTHEID!! Queers who are taking a stand against apartheid are inviting all queer people and allies to join in the struggles for the rights and dignity of queer people of territories occupied by Canada and Israel. We reject the corporatization and depoliticization of queer identity that is being "celebrated" today. Instead, we celebrate the long history of queers being at the forefront of social justice movements (from the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. to the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa). This year, we continue this legacy of Queer resistance. As we march against different manifestations of homophobia both at home and across the world, we also march in solidarity with all people struggling for social justice and self determination everywhere. Like many queers throughout North America and beyond, we are fed up with Israel's attempts to falsely brand itself as a safe haven for queers in order to divert the world's attention from its racist policies towards Palestinian people. We believe all forms of oppression are related. We do not support the fight against homophobia if it is perpetuating racism. We are also standing in solidarity with indigenous people in "Canada" who are confronting colonization and imperialism. We recognize that the Canadian state, from its very beginning, has disrupted and destroyed many first nations communities through sexual violence, repression, assimilation and occupation. Queer rights are moot if they mean legitimization of occupation. There can be no pride in our communities if we do not stand in solidarity with others who are resisting all forms of oppression. Canada and Israel bolster each other's colonial occupations through political, military and economic support. To us, the links are clear. As queers our role in the struggle is obvious. It's been 8 months since Israel's brutal assault on Gaza which saw hundreds of thousands of people across the world take to the streets in outrage. Many have joined the global movement of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel. In Tyendinaga, Six Nations, Barriere Lake, Akwesasne, Coast Salish and across the continent, first nations communities are fanning the flames of resistance to colonization. Recently, in Toronto and MontrÈal, Queers have taken to the streets during Pride parades to loudly declare their love and solidarity towards the people of Palestine and their struggle for justice, land and dignity. This Pride week, it's time for us in Ottawa to reaffirm our solidarity and to march with our allies in our hearts. Join us as we loudly declare: THERE IS NO PRIDE IN OCCUPATION! ************************************ this pride parade contingent is endorsed: AGITATE! We have verified the details of this story through Amnesty International and LGBT organizations in Portugal. "Mahmoud" was born in Saudi Arabia, but returned to Gaza -- the birthplace of his parents -- at the age of 12, in 1997. It was around the same time that he discovered his homosexuality. When his family learned this news, he was repeatedy beaten by his father and nine uncles; if it hadn't been for the intervention of his mother, he would likely not have survived. When Israel attacked Gaza in May of 2008 (the January assault was only the most recent one), his father threw Mahmoud out of the house, thinking it was the perfect opportunity to get rid of him. This is what happened next, in his own words: "The tanks were about 200 meters from our house and approaching. Outside, there were snipers that I couldn't see, so I began to run. Suddenly, I remember a big explosion and blood all over my body, coming from my head. Some women came and tried to help me, and I was taken to the European Hospital. My heart stopped twice, but they saved me -- barely." Now blind in his left eye and with shrapnel still embedded throughout his body, Mahmoud was allowed to go to Egypt, then Syria, in search of treatment that would save his eye and remove the shrapnel moving ever closer to his carotid artery. Unfortunately, it now appears that this treatment can be obtained only in the West. His ultimate dream is to get that treatment -- along with asylum, and freedom from persecution -- in Portugal, where his boyfriend of two years lives. "I just want to be safe and happy," he says. Amnesty International has arranged for him to get to Portugal, but we need to raise money for his airfare, temporary lodging along the way and the procedural requirements imposed by the Portugese embassy. We figure we can make this happen if we can raise about $4,500, and we already have raised $1,000 of that. Can you help? Even $10 or $25 will bring him one step closer to safety and health. If you have any questions, please e-mail us: quaia.toronto [at] gmail [dot] com Posted in [18]News | Comments Off h1 [19]Join us at Toronto Pride! June 15, 2009 Can't stop. Won't stop. That's the theme of this year's Pride parade, and we think it's fitting for our group. Our community hasn't stopped fighting apartheid since 1986, when the Simon Nkoli Anti-Apartheid Committee was founded in Toronto by gay activists against South African apartheid. Members of that Committee will be joining us in this year's parade, under the same banner they marched with in pride parades of the 1980s! As you may know, after our very successful May 23 forum at Buddies, "Coming Out Against Apartheid," QuAIA has come under attack from B'nai Brith, the Canadian Jewish Congress, the National Post, and the Toronto Sun, with attempts to ban us from Pride. El-Farouk Khaki, Pride Grand Marshal, has been singled out for attack as a gay Muslim. Straight pro-Israel lobbyists like Bernie Farber have been lecturing the queer community on what Pride is supposed to be about. QuAIA has not backed down, and neither has Pride. The response from the queer community and the queer press has been overwhelmingly supportive. Your presence and support are needed to KEEP PRIDE POLITICAL! This year we are going to have the biggest anti-apartheid contingent EVER in the Pride parade, and we want you to march with us! Also joining us will be members of the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid, Women in Solidarity with Palestine, and [20]Nice Jewish Boys Against Israeli Apartheid. So come out against apartheid on June 28th at 1:00 p.m. Meet us at the corner of Bloor and Church Streets and look for our banners at parade entry M362. We're planning to have t-shirts and bandanas for our marchers. Women and trans folks are also invited to join QuAIA and Women in Solidarity with Palestine at the Dyke March on Saturday, June 27th. Meet us at 1:30 p.m. at Church and Hayden; look for our banner. You can RSVP on Facebook for our contingents in the [21]Pride parade and the [22]Dyke March.
